How does time-shifting
and recording television alter the viewing experience? Will this destroy the
industry if advertisers can't guarantee viewers actually watching (rather than
skipping) advertisements?
Time-shifting is the idea of watching something that has been recorded.
Time-shifting allows us to rewind, pause, play and skip ads whenever we want
to. The Internet has really helped the growth of 'fan culture.' Fans can now
interact more with other fans and producers online on social media like Facebook,
Twitter, YouTube & blogs and thus create a community.
Yes, to some extent because people would not be understanding the ads as they tend to skip them but at the same time, while skipping ads, they may notice the logo or brand name at least.
Leaver (2008) suggests that the contradictions in current television
programming and online extras might be considered a 'tyranny of digital
distance'? What does that mean, and does
it matter ?
Time zone will always make global viewing difficult. This barrier will
always exists.
Tyranny of digital distance continues to persists as we have so many
spoilers online.
